Create a Plan to Provide Opportunity

The Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation, in conjunction with the Wildlife Resources Commission, strives to increase access to outdoor recreation for children and their families to enjoy, conserve and protect wildlife and their habitats for future generations. Your gifts allow us to continue these efforts so families can enjoy resources that North Carolina has to offer.

Many of our supporters choose to support our future through planned gifts. Unlike cash donations, planned gifts are typically made from assets in your estate rather than from disposable income, and may come to fruition after your lifetime. Even people of modest means can make a difference in the lives of wildlife and their habitat and in the lives of families enjoying the resources and outdoor recreation.

Whether you would like to put your donation to work today or benefit us after your lifetime, we can help you find a charitable plan that meets your goals. With your help, we can continue to conserve and preserve wildlife while providing access for families to enjoy them.

A GIFT IN YOUR WILL OR LIVING TRUST

One of the easiest and most popular ways to make an impact at the Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Foundation is to include a charitable bequest in your will or living trust. A bequest allows you to leave a legacy of support for families and wildlife resources without affecting your cash flow today.

With a bequest, you can give a percentage of your estate, so that your gift will remain proportionate to the size of your estate, or you can give a certain amount of cash, securities or property. Either way, your gift allows you to retain full control of your assets now, while ensuring that WORF will continue to increase and provide access while conserving and preserving wildlife and habitats for future generations.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A BEQUEST?

A bequest in your will or living trust is:

  • Easy. A few sentences in your will or living trust complete the gift.

  • Revocable. Until your will or trust goes into effect, you are free to alter your plans.

  • Versatile. You can give a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or, most common, a percentage of your estate.

STEPS TO MAKING YOUR BEQUEST

  1. Determine whether you’d like to make a gift of a specific amount or leave a percentage of your estate, and whether you would like to direct your gift to a specific program or leave your gift unrestricted, allowing it to be used for our most pressing needs.

  2. Take our bequest language (below) to your estate planning attorney to include in your will or living trust.

  3. Contact the Directors at the Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation to inform us of your gift so we can thank you and ensure your bequest will be fulfilled in a manner you intend.

Bequest Language

The following language is an example of wording that may be used to name Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation as a beneficiary of your last will and testament. Your gift may be of a specific dollar amount or it may also be of a percentage of your estate.

"I, [name], of [city, state ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation 56-1944942, [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose."

A GIFT OF RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS

A TAX-SMART STRATEGY

While 401(k)s, IRAs and other retirement plans are excellent vehicles for accumulating assets for your use during retirement, much to many people’s surprise, they are a far less attractive way to pass an inheritance to loved ones. Here’s why.

THE BURDEN OF TAXES

Retirement plan assets are subject to income and possible estate taxes when you name anyone other than your spouse as a beneficiary. These taxes can deplete a significant percentage of your hard-earned savings–leaving less for heirs than you had hoped.

A CHARITABLE SOLUTION

If you would like to include a gift to conserve and protect wildlife, critical habitat and increase access to outdoor recreation for children and families through your estate, consider the tax-smart strategy of naming Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation as the beneficiary of all or a portion of your retirement plan assets. Because of our tax-exempt status, the full value of your retirement plan assets make a difference for families by increasing access to North Carolina’s wild places. If you are 70 ½ years of age or older and will be receiving a required minimum distribution, you can select to have a qualified charitable distribution donated to the Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation in lieu of the required minimum distribution.

STEPS TO TAKE TO MAKE YOUR GIFT

Donating retirement plan assets is easy. And if you need to change or revoke your gift at any point during your lifetime, you can. Simply take these steps:

  1. Contact your tax advisor to learn more on Qualified Charitable Distributions.

  2. Contact your retirement plan administrator for a simple change-of-beneficiary form or simply download the form from your provider’s website.

  3. Decide what percentage (1–100) you would like us to receive.

  4. Name Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation and the gift percentage on the form.

  5. Return the form to your plan administrator.

  6. Contact the Directors at the Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Foundation to let us know of your plans.
